Week of October 6th, 2008

I guess I need to let everybody know how the world financial crisis is affecting all of us in Botswana. There really is no effect, our monetary policy are very conservative, and the culture here is one that frowns on borrowing or having any debt, we have a very strong financial system and have not seen any real effect on our economy except some price pressure on oil that has helped lower our cost.

On the U.S. Presidential election most of us are for Obama since he is a descendent of an African Chief from neighboring Kenya.

Had a few exciting things happen this week, let me update you on the events and then I will go over my poker play which was also exciting. I spent a lot of time working on organizing my journal and pictures from France I hope to have that done by next week. I also booked a trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico. It is my nephew “Z’s” 18th birthday and also my brother Lee got engaged. So all the boys in my family except "A" as he is to young, are flying to Puerto Rico for a gamble, drinking and wild whatever weekend. “Z” is an up and coming poker play that I am sure you will all see someday on the World Series or poker. In Puerto Rico the gambling age is 18 so my gift to “Z” was to take him somewhere he could play live poker. He has been playing on-line for about 2 years now. I will update you on the trip as we get closer.

Had a big meeting with the village elders this week about one of the village contractors. We outsource some of our engineering work and it seemed our engineers were over billing us, the elders asked me to get involved in mediating a solution, fortunately everybody was civil and we were able to come up with a fair solution.

The highlight of the week was taking Margarite kayaking on Lake Ngami. Lake Ngami in northwestern Botswana is the top birding spot in southern Africa. Good rains throughout Ngamiland District, coupled with the highest floodwater levels in the Okavango in the last 20 years, makes the extensive flooding of Lake Ngami a certainty.

Lake Ngami is one of Botswana’s 12 Important Bird Areas (IBAs). Even when dry, it meets the criteria set by BirdLife International for qualification as an IBA, due to the presence of globally threatened and near-threatened species such as the Lesser Kestrel and Black-winged Pratincole, and numerous range-restricted and biome-restricted species such as the Kalahari Robin, Hartlaub’s Babbler, and Burchell’s Sandgrouse, among others.

However, when flooded, the birdlife is exceptionally prolific and varied, with the emphasis on large numbers of congregatory waterbirds (more than 1% of the global populations of many species).

Going bird watching and kayaking with Margarite was just awesome. Unfortunately I forgot to take my camera so I do not have any pictures of the birds, someone else did get a picture of Margarite and I on the kayak which is above.

Poker this week was a mix of quality and quantity. I played 2,164 hands over13.28 hours which is 163 hands an hour. My hourly rate was $16.50 significantly lower then my rate of $29 and $53 and hour which I had the last two week of August. I thought I would share with you why my hourly goes down when I play a higher volume of hands per hour. First it is important to understand why I bump my volume up. As I have mentioned before you get FFP for playing poker which earns you monetary bonuses. In this case I was getting a $240.00 bonus all I needed was 500 more FFP. You get .333 FFP for each hand you are dealt. Even though my hourly was $16.50 I got another $240.00 in that 13 hours of play or $18.50 an hour so my real hourly was $35.00. That is the reason for the high volume. The way I get the high volume is to play more then one table at a time, this week most of the time I was playing 3 tables simultaneously. When you are playing more then one table it is harder to recognize player’s patterns. Also when it is time to make a big decision like call an all in bet, it is hard to remember how your opponent bet in previous round of betting for that hand, did they call preflop or raise, did they check post flop, call or raise. Below are two hands I lost as I was not as focused as I should have been, because I was playing 3 tables simultaneously.

stevewonder1: folds
roy_johnson: folds
Worldman: raises $4 to $5 This appears as an over bet like he wants to steal.
americanstar: folds
bataa3: folds
DUG: calls $4 I just call, because I want him to over bet on the flop.
*** FLOP *** [7c 6h Tc] With a $5.00 preflop raise I doubt he hit anything.
DUG: checks
Worldman: bets $10 If he hit he would not bet that much because he would want me to call.
DUG: raises $25 to $35 So I will raise to show him who is boss.
Worldman: raises $17.90 to $52.90 and is all-in If I as paying attention and would realize that his steal could have been with 76 T6 T7 or he might have even had a real hand like TT, QQ, KK, AA
DUG: calls $17.90 When some one goes all in after you make a big re-raise most likely they have a real hand. If I was paying attention I would have only called after the flop and folded to the all in. It cost me $58.15
